I have a simple arch machine running.
It's an HP a730n...
Specs are:
Intel P4 3.0ghz (775 socket)
512mb Ram
Integrated in Intel 915G chipsetIntel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900
The only purpose this machine has in life is to act as a media terminal.
Basically, this machine has a 17" monitor and it sits next to my main machine. I want to use this machine to watch movies and play music (movies off of a windows home server)
Software wise everything is fine.
My question is:
Would I be better with the integrated 900gma w/ shared memory
-or-
an ATI RADEON 7000 32MB DDR Memory PCI
I don't want to spend any money, and I happen to have the extra card lying around...
I don't care about special effects on the desktop, a plain jane gnome is fine for me...
So what do you guy think,
Thanks,
Rich

It sounds like the intel card would work fine if you don't need 3d. From what I've read, Intel is more compatible with linux (better supported drivers) and I have had many problems of my own with ati drivers. I think your radeon card is no longer supported by the ATI Catalyst so your best bet would be open source drivers anyway.

Thanks,
I think I am going to stick with the intel gma900... everything is working perfectly, it event handles 1280x1024 w/ gnome and compositing enabled!
Thanks,
Rich
