X crashing at random

So I run X within GDM, and every so once in awhile X will crash and GDM will restart it. It seems this can happen pretty much at any time, though so far it happened only while I was doing something (I never came back to find my session restarted) and a rather high percentage of them happen after I press the "enter" key, though that might be coincidence.

I found this in the GDM log:

http://pastebin.com/HXpS9PTY

Any ideas?

I summon daemons from the depths of /etc/rc.d

Re: X crashing at random

Take a look here, particularly #21. I had this problem too. You want to remove gdm from rc.conf and start it using inittab.

hi,
in my previous post, you can find harware info and also information that I have intel video card and on top of it I mentioned that I have kms enabled. Thought I've provided everything what is needed. Or am I wrong?

Thanks.

I saw you've already posted the info, I was asking the other poster to do the same. Maybe I should have phrased it differently, sorry about that.

The only thing that comes to mind is http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17705 but it may be another (yet unreported) bug.

Re: X crashing at random

Maybe the problem is solved with the new xf86-video-intel (2.12.0). The X crash has not happened since i 'pacman -Syu' two days ago.

Yeah, they seem to make it better, although they do crash here, just less often and less severely (I don't have to reboot, restarting X is enough).

I wasn't doing anything on TTY2, nor did I try to login on TTY2 after the crash.

Re: X crashing at random

What are you using to start X? It looks like X is started on VT2, which causes problems because it is claimed by getty a short while after that. Gdm has been fixed for this a while ago, other methods could still suffer this problem.

I'm just starting it in inittab, runlevel 5..

x:5:once:/usr/bin/valgrind /usr/bin/startx &> /tmp/valgrind.report'

Starting it from TTY1 normally (login first, startx) is what I'm running right now but no crashes yet this way.
