i686 or x86_64

hi guys, am gentoo user, and trying archlinux.
in gentoo i use march=native, and compile stuff, i need not worry about the architecture.

am using centrino core 2 duo, with 4gb ram.
what would u recommend me to install, an i686 or x86_64 version.

i guess intel core 2 duo comes under i686 family and its a 32 bit processor, but can execute 64bit words.....

what do u think?
