This probably isn't the best place for this but I wasn't sure where to put it ('Off-Topic' seemed a little too off topic).
I have a Western Digital 500GB external HDD. I can get it to work for a little while, copying files, playing music, but then it stops and my computer doesn't recognize that it's still connected. It might be a problem with the HDD because when I pull out the USB cord it doesn't shut off (normally it would). So I have to pull the power plug. Then when I plug it back in it works for a little while again.
Currently I'm trying to back up as much stuff as possible, but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem, or some idea about what, if anything I can do to fix it.

Try connecting it to a different USB port. In particular, if its connected via a hub or case, try connecting it directly to the USB ports on the motherboard.

It was hooked directly into a USB port on the computer. I did just switch it from one USB port to another on my computer and tried to backup some more files and it worked for a bit then froze on me again.
On Sunday the electricity went off here suddenly while the HDD was on and plugged in, and now that I think about it that was around the time I noticed it doing this. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Maybe try an Linux Live CD (like Ubuntu) and see if the freeze also happens there.

I booted up a sidux live CD and it seems to be working fine. So now the problem must be something with my OS.
I also had a problem shutting down my computer. When I shut down from within KDE it kills X and brings me to the command prompt (which it's not supposed to do). After putting in the command to shutdown from the command prompt the computer would start to shutdown and then freeze.
I'm thinking now maybe these 2 things are related? Also both these things started happening when the electricity went out unexpectedly this past Sunday. I'm hoping there is some solution to this without having to reinstall the OS.

Not sure why but everything is working as normal again. I'll mark this as solved for now unless things change again.

I have exactly the same problem with my Transcend 320GB external HDD. It just dissapears and then i can't shutdown Arch.
