This post also matched the forum about problems with laptops, but in this case the cause of problem might be completely unrelated.
Anyways, I just got a new Lenovo Ideapad y550 laptop with windows 7 preinstalled. Using the built-in disk managment utility I`ve changed the size of the C: partition from around 400GB to around 217GB, and have been planning on installing the arch linux on the 200GB left. However, after choosing the /dev/sda in Disc selection I get an error
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder.
Press any key to exit cfdisk
so, I`ve checked the output of fdisk -lu, ant this is what I got:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 2048 411647 204800 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 411648 446554495 223071424 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 882397568 945830271 31716325 f W95 Ext`d (LBA)
partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda4 945830272 976773167 15471448 12 Compaq diagnostics
/dev/sda5 882399616 945830271 31715328 7 HPFS/NTFS
Yeah, that`s it. I really wouldn`t like to format the whole drive, and then install w7 again, so I`d be grateful If you helped me solve this matter.
So, I thought that maybe I should create a new partition in windows 7 on the unused space. When I tried to do this It said my disk already has a maximum number of partitions (??? there was such thing??). The current partitions as seen by w7 are
14,75GB OEM partition
200MB Primary partition
C: 212,74GB Boot, primary partition
207,83GB unused space
Lenovo D: 30,25GB logical disk
Well.... Anything is fine as long as it works, but I`d prefer to not reinstall the w7.
Sorry for formating, but I`ve got no idea how to make proper tables, and I`m to tired to think about anything right now... have to sleeep....
Well, I removed one partition, and this is my current fdisk -lu output
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 2048 411647 204800 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 411648 446554495 223071424 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 945830272 976773167 154711448 12 Compaq diagnostics
still no idea what`s going on... gogle suggests formatting the whole HDD, but I believe it`s a bad idea to do so while dealing with laptop. Some commented similiar issue to be caused by cylinder boundaries overlapping, but others say it`s not a problem.
