I have tried booting both the i686 and x86_64 core discs on this laptop and the i686 core disc boots into the splash screen and when I asked it to boot up to carry out an installation it takes me to a login and I am able to carry out an installation without any problems.
I have installed 64 bit distros on here before without any issues.
I know I could just use the i686 core disc but this would not allow me to run my 64 bit xp virtually within Arch.
The 64 bit Arch image allows me to get to the splash screen but then fails when it gets to the udev part of the boot process...
Google turns up no related results.
Any help would be appreciated.

So you've installed 64-bit Arch but you can't boot it? Any errors messages? dmesg?

I have installed other 64 bit linux distros on this laptop, never managed to successfully instal Arch 64 bit.
I boot up the Arch Linux x86_64 core image and it gets to the splash screen asking me for booting options like installer or memtest etc..
It starts the boot process and before it gets to the login screen, it fails at the udev process. I am unable to obtain any errors from dmesg as it gets to that point and immediately reboots the system.
I'm at a loss...

Have you tried some previous "releases" or just the current one? Are you sure the image isn't corrupted?
Boot some liveCD and get /var/log/dmesg.log.

I have tried other core discs yes. I thought the disc/image used might have been corrupted but I have used it on another laptop without any problems. Still, I tried another disc, another media (usb) and both the dual iso and the standard x86_64 iso - none of them would get past the boot and into the login.
I will boot into ubuntu's live disc when I have the chance (away from home on a windows machine at the moment) and let you know the contents of /var/log/dmesg.log (tab completion for paths in arch linux forums doesn't work... who knew! lol)

I'd gladly drop the forums altogether and just create an iPhone app / desktop widget 'Fix it!'. You know, you click it, look at the pretty animation and it's fixed! Cool, huh? :-) Unfortunately it's still in pre-alpha stages.
