Gnome's Background flickers and then screen goes black [SOLVED]

Hello everyone, new Arch user here.  I am having a rather annoying problem with X right now.  I am at the GUI portion of the Arch wiki and I've installed gnome.  I followed the portion of the guide where I started xterm in X, and this worked completely fine, aside from a funky resolution.  However, when I started Gnome, my background flickered for a moment and then my screen went blank.  Could anyone give some insight to this problem?  Thank you for your time and patience.

I removed some of the sample code which gave instructions on how to execute a WM and now it works.  I will mark this as SOLVED- hopefully this helps some people.
