[forget it i'm wrong]rt2860sta: I think it's time to switch to rt2x00

Hi all,

I've got a EEEPC 901, and like everyone with a Ralink wireless device, I struggled last year to get the rt2x00 to work with my machine, and finally decided to stick to the "steaming pile of manure" drivers. They didn't work all the time, though.

Today, I tried the official open source drivers with kernel 34, and, well, they just work out of the box with my various wireless networks.

That's my message to EEE and other Ralink users: make the switch if you don't need n speed (n speed still doesn't work afaik). It may work better.

YMMV, of course; just my experience. I didn't test all possible configs, etc...

edit: actually, I found out that it fails on a open network where the other one failed.

Do you need to load modules in a special order?

No, I'm actually only specifying rt2800pci in rc.conf, I let dependencies do their job.

I'd like to update that I had an open wifi network to which I could not connect with the sta driver (was it a driver issue? dhcp clients timing out, I was it a lot of time on the forum with many hacks to make it work, but noone with a convincing reply), and I still can't get it to work with the rt2x00 drivers (but now I get an IP, but data fails to get transmitted without anything convincing in the logs I read).

Re: [forget it i'm wrong]rt2860sta: I think it's time to switch to rt2x00

Chris, you are right, the same behaviour here. But I didn't notice it because I used Wicd directly after loading the modules... and Wicd has no problem scanning and associating! But now that I tried again I could not get data transmitted after getting an IP, even on the networks which previsouly worked... It's very weird.

And wicd doing what iwlist fails to do is even weirder.

I think that I spoke too soon...
