I had some very rare free time and decided to check out some of the KDE features that I've never bothered with before. I thought maybe I would discover something cool that could make my everyday work a little easier or more efficient. Well I guess experimenting with KDE is a huge mistake. I decided to try out the seemingly innocuous newspaper activity view. Now right clicking on my desktop has no effect at all. I've spent hours in the GUI tools trying to find my way out. I've searched here and endlessly on Google's Linux search page. All with no success. I even changed to netbook mode hoping something would get jostled loose. No dice.
Just wondering if anybody knows what sort of open sesame is required to get out of this mode. I can't even change my wallpaper for crying out loud.

I found a somewhat convoluted way out of this pickle in the event anybody else gets stuck like this. Add the "Show Widget Dashboard" widget to your task panel, activate it, spot the cashew in the lower left corner of your screen and then configure your way back to a normal desktop. There really has to be an easier (and more obvious) way to do this, but at least I found one.

Don't use KDE myself, so don't know if this is still current, but this might help (they're talking about the "Search and Launch" containment, but that shouldn't matter):

I almost have to think that they are meaning to disable those two activities from the desktop form factor and reserve them for netbook form factor. Then again who knows. I've always chosen KDE over other DEs, but that's primarily because I like the others even less. I guess I just need to keep it simple.

You can configure it is systemsettings. No need for desktop right click.

I had that problem yesterday with "Search and launch containment" mode and I solved like that:
When I swich to "search and launch contaiment" mode, my kde4 toolbox is gone from top right of the screen, and I found it on bottom left corner (hidden under kde panel).
So move kde panel on top of the screen and then swich desktop mode with kde4 toolbox.

I had this happen to me too, after 30 mins of trying to figure it out I just deleted the ~/.kde4 folder and restarted...lost all my customizations and stuff but it was back to normal

Click Control-F12 to activate the dashboard. You will find the toolbox atop.

If you ever need to, deleting ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* is sufficient to get rid of all plasma stuff. Even then, though, you might lose data, for example in a notes plasmoid.

This is handy to know. I was looking around all over to see if I could just edit a text file, but this would certainly suffice.
