[SOLVED]pacman --> "error: 'xxxx' : could not find or read package

I used to be a Slackware junkie way back in the day, and picked up Linux again recently after finding an old D600 laptop lying around.

I'm being stonewalled by pacman, and for the moment I'm just trying to install GNOME.

The command "pacman -S xorg' returns with "error: 'xorg' : could not find or read package"

The error is immediate, like nothing is happening.  pacman -S anything returns the same thing.  I'm using the syntax right, I've read the man pages, played around with different mirrors and tried everything I could think of rationally, and some things that weren't very rational.  I searched and found all sorts of pacman problems that come with verbose feedback, but nothing that resembles my problem.  Internet IS working (I can ping the servers I'm trying to connect to) and I'm using eth0 before attempting to get the b43legacy drivers to work on Arch.

I've been stonewalled and am not sure what else to do since I'm getting no feedback from pacman.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

John

You probably have not done an database refresh/update since you installed so there is no package database for pacman to read.  Do a "pacman -Syu"

When in doubt, pacman -Syu

Actually, that could cause more problems (in some situations) than you had before. *looks at Allan* tongue
