Looks like it's about fonts. Try to reinstall all font packages first.

Re: xorg 11R6.8.2-2 brake all GTK apps

Upgrading Xorg will reset some default values, so reinstalling other packages may well help.

My example:

I like to have my mouse pointer set globally to "justblue" (from kde-look). By globally, I mean that even the KDM login screen has a nice translucent blue cursor, as well as all users by default.

So I have /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons linked to /opt/icons and here default/index.theme contains "inherits justblue" which is a folder in /opt/icons.

Upgrading xorg set index.theme back to "inherits core" and I got the boring little black mouse pointer back sad

Traing to rollback to xorg 11R6.8.1 not solve the problem

Thank you ever so much for showing me how to get global cursors. I've been hating the black arrow for months but never bothered to look it up.

To keep xorg from overwriting your file, add

NoUpgrade = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme

to pacman.conf.

Is this different from setting cursors like this (for example)

Xcursor.theme: basecursorblue

in ~/.Xdefaults ?
BTW http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=7873 (I love basecursorblue :-))

@leX: http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Adding%20Fonts
Try running commands from 3. as root (that's what most font packages do after installation - reinstalling files is not necessary of course).

I haven't tried that. A problem I've had in the past with X and KDE put me off that route - my "xmodmap" commands to get my 7-button mouse working correctly never seem to get executed when I placed the command in various X files. I ended up putting it in /etc/profile and put up with a warning message if I log in to a text console sad

And I found out that the default horrid black cursor is in usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc as cursor.pcf.gz. Now which X developer thought they'd save creating a "cursors" directory by chucking it in with the fonts? wink
