Amarok Problems

Hallo everone,

I installed Amarok yesterday since most people told me Amarok is on of the best music player for Linux. But seems like Amarok won't be able to play a simple audio cd. Opening an audio cd and adding all tracks to the playlist triggers Amarok to load music specific data from the internet (so far so good)

But pressing the 'Play' button leads only to a 3 second cut of the track, then Amarok stops again. Doesn't look like a working tool to me.

Any hint would be helpfull.  Thanks.

I'm using Amarok 2.3.1 and KDE 4.4.3.

Re: Amarok Problems

Just verified that Talking Heads -- Little creatures plays fine, so...

Can you play any audio for more than 3 seconds, or is it just audio CDs.

I assume you are running Phonon -- Are you using the gstreamer backend or the Xine back end? Kde Control Panel -> Multimedia , backend tab?

What is the currently selected music output device in Kde Control Panel -> Multimedia , preferences tab? What are your other choices

What codecs to you have  (What is the output of pacman -Qs gstreamer)

Are you using PulseAudio?
Are you using Jack?

What is the output of lspci -v

Re: Amarok Problems

You are using an Intel HDA chip as am I.  A have the "good" as well as the "bad" and the "ugly" codecs.

I do use the Xine backend.  You might try that instead.

You also might try adding the following line to your /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf file

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

It enables message signaled interrupts on your PCI bus for the audio card.  It may help, it won't hurt.  It has worked on some systems.

I gather this is a Sony laptop.  I've been avoiding them for some time now (ever since their audio CD rootkit stunt), plus they are not very Linux friendly.
I suppose the next step would be to look at the codec hardware.  (On Intel, the front end is handled by the HDA chip, the backend is another chip that translates the HDA output to the appropriate hardware out -- Analog, HDMI, hi-def audio on fiber, etc...)

If you are curious, take a look under /proc/asound/.  There should be a directory called card0.  I don't think you should have a card1 directory, but verify that.
Under /proc/asount/card0 (or card1 if appropriate) there should be codec files (codec#1, codec#2, ...).  These files might become interesting later if you can't get the mixer to behave.  For now, just make sure they exist.

Have you tried other audio sources besides an audio disk?  Under Kde Control Panel -> Multimedia, what happens with the "test" button -- does it play a little 7 or 8 second tune, or does it cut out after 3 seconds.  Will Amarok play an audio file for more than 3 seconds.  What if you use Dolphin's preview to try to play an audio file?

Edit: added first paragraph that somehow got lost during the posting process

Re: Amarok Problems

I'll try the Xine backend this evening and extent the modprobe config file.

You're right, it is a Sony laptop, but I'm quite satisfied running arch on it. The only real flaws I discovered until now or this software Fn keys and the hibernate functionality.

While some Fn keys are already working (Arch detected it as Sonly laptop), I was't able to locate the configuration file where I can enable the rest of the Fn keys.

The hibernate problem is worser. After returning from hibernate my keyboard does not respond and I have to restart my system :-(

Using the test button in the mutlimedia preferences tab I got the full melody. Testing amarok with a usual mp3 file results not playing the file (amarok did't even start playing) while other players like vlc, audacity or kaffeine do their work without problems.

I have no clue what your problem could be, but you seem to be running a weird mixture of up-to-date and outdated packages? Please update your system.

Re: Amarok Problems

Current KDE version on my box is 4.4.5. It has been so for some time.

If you are using gstreamer you need to make sure you have all the gstreamer bad and ugly plugins. Just look at gstreamer in the wiki, it tells you all the plgins you need and I think even gives you the command to get them with pacman.

Do you have xine? Using xine as a back end is in fact recommend by amarok developers.

Re: Amarok Problems

You're right. The KDE version displayed in Amarok is not correct. I am up-to-date using KDE 4.4.5.1.
