First time I have tried Arch on a friends old imac G3 slot cd machine.
I can navigate through the install to the point where it tells me I am going to install packages then I get a dialogue saying:
error: "base": not found in sync db
base package not found, searching for group...
Package installation failed
H/D was setup by auto-install so that should be OK
What's going on?
Moderator edit: make sure people know what architecture you are installing on and post in the appropriate subforum, thanks

G3 is not an i686 machine, it won't work.

I'm setting it up from the cd - haven't tried the network install. Having the cd in hand, I hadn't given it a thought to be honest.

That's why you're getting the db error, but according to Wikipedia, you have a PPC-type processor so I would surprised if regular Arch runs on it.
Maybe you should try http://www.archlinuxppc.org/

Bregol was correct. I just went back to install options and configured the network and it's now downloading

I'm sorry, I've never tried it so I won't be of help here. It should be working, but I'm not sure how well is it maintained.

Thanks for all your suggestions - all seems to be downloading OK now. Maybe a cd prob but MD5 checks OK etc. Looked for a forum for PPC version but it just led me here. My friend doesn't want to lose the old iMac as he's only had a couple of weeks use in 10 years!
RETRY: yes understood - thanks
