Wine + WoW problem

Trying to run WoW in Linux.

Fully updated the system. Installed wine from repositories. Copied a working install of WoW from a Windows partition. Edited the config to allow opengl. The game starts, brings me to the login screen. I enter details, see the "connecting" popup and then wine crashes. This is all console output I get after typing "wine Wow.exe".

Re: Wine + WoW problem

This happens from the new 3.3.5 WoW patch. Supposedly the "anti-debugging" features in the new RealID system cause that hard crash. According to posts in the bug listing on winehq, it has to do with a kernel bug that is supposedly fixed in 2.6.35 (not sure how though, the bug listing got spammed by people "confirming" it and I couldn't find the post(s) that originally linked it to an actual kernel bug, just confirmations that upgrading or downgrading kernels to either 2.6.32 or 2.6.35 fixed the crash)

Some people have found different hacks to temporarily get around it, but I have not given them a try. Check here http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23323 for more details

Re: Wine + WoW problem

Thank you. Deleting the cache folder worked. Waiting for a kernel update.

This is a shot in the dark here, as I don't play WoW, but does it recreate the cache folder each time you open it? That may be the problem.

It does but deleting it a second time does not work.

Re: Wine + WoW problem

I found this post, deleted my cache folder and instead of Wow crashing, it just locks up, music still playing in the background.

Re: Wine + WoW problem

I just got wow working with the latest wine (1.2-1) by using the reg tweak from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=579378

Before I did that, my client would crash when I tried to log in.

Just for the record: the latest wine is version 1.3.0-1.

Re: Wine + WoW problem

I had this very same problem, I have managed to fix it by installing an older version of the kernel alongside the cuirrent one whilst waiting for the new kernel, at which point I will remove the older version.

To do this, install kernel26-lts from the AUR.

You then need to edit your grub configuration file to include the kernel26-lts in your boot choices (alongside Arch and Arch Fallback).

I also had to install nvidia-lts because I have a nvidia graphics card.  Nvidia-lts is the older version of the driver made to work with kernel26-lts.

Hope this help smile

Errrr, I have a feeling that the fallback kernel _is_ kernel26-lts ... and I don't see any package named kernel26-lts in the AUR.

Re: Wine + WoW problem

Correction, kernel26-lts is not in the AUR, its in Core, so you are probably right about it also being fallback.  Its nvidia-lts that's in the AUR tongue

Anyway, that worked for me, so if karol is right, it should work find in Arch Fallback.

Although, I updated my latest kernel today from Core (kernel26 2.6.34.2-1)  and WoW is running fine, so I removed both kernel26-lts and nvidia-lts.

Cheeeeeeeerss,
wink

Just for the record: the latest wine is version 1.3.0-1.

The latest one in the repos is 1.3.0-1. You can try it out by downloading the package manually:
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50
or try one of those servers https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus

Re: Wine + WoW problem

Just to clear things up:

1) the kernel on arch is just one (ie there's no fallback kernel)
2) what's 'fallback' is the initramfs (the stuff that loads just after the kernel when you boot)
3) the difference is that the "normal" initramfs contains only the stuff that you configured to be there (/etc/mkinitcpio.conf) and the "fallback" contains the default selection of drivers (eg all filesystem drivers, etc..)

So fallback is NOT kernel26-lts, fallback is still the most current kernel in the repos.

You're talking about the fallback image.

Re: Wine + WoW problem

Ok, I'm totally confused now.

Is it possible to get WoW running in Arch( I have 64bit) via wine?  I've read yes and no here.

I did a pacman -Syu today and I didn't have any updates. but WoW still crashes after entering in my login information.

Check if you really have the latest versions. If you don't and pacman still says you're up to date, pick only the mirrors from https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus

Packages are handled by pacman and you can use some AUR helper for AUR PKGBUILDs.
There's also a web interface http://www.archlinux.org/packages/ of the package db, so you can check what's the current version this way too.

Re: Wine + WoW problem

Thanx, I changed my mirrorlist, updated, rebooted and ran WoW successfully.  Thank you for the help.
