I assure you that you won't be able to prohibit him watch what he wants, that by the way it's so normal!

Re: Porn list to block

I have only one computer at home, no router, whatsoever, just an ADSL connection. I want to setup OpenDNS and familyshield, but how can I make sure, the kids dont turn off the proxy settings in Firefox or Konqueror?

BTW slightly offtopic: https://launchpad.net/timekpr

UPDATE: oops, cancel that, stupid question, this has nothing to do with a proxy.

Unless the children get a live-cd to avoid configuration barriers. Live-CDs/USBs are a great way to avoid proxies/unfriendly/"unfriendly" configuration.

God Saves BIOS Password smile

with that he shouldn´t be able to boot from CD/USB/Whatever without the BIOS Password and than maybe add a GRUB Password too. He can´t do anything bad without opening the computer from that point

[off topic]My opinion about raising children is different than yours I guess. Could you explane to me why you won't let him watch? (because of his age? Well, it's normal for his age to explorer and do stuff like that, besides hiding porn makes it that more interesting!) And did you encounter him about his surfing behaviours? Why or why not? If you didn't: I'd recommend a good talk.[/off topic]

Re: Porn list to block

Anyway, it will be extremely difficult to drive him away from porn. He always can watch it on house of friends and the like. Being serious, nothing better than a good talk about that to try solving the problem. And, yes, trying to hide/build-up strong security fortress only make that more interesting to do. If there weren't the people that try building strong security barriers, there maybe wouldn't be hackers(in the sense of disabling "built-in" security for freedom)/crackers(in the sense of crackers), people that are moved by challenges (such as security barriers build up and people the like.

Its simple like that. Its my cousin! Its his mothers job to take talks but anyway.

Its the same to say "Why dont you let your children drink alcohol and tell them why it is bad". Children are mostly stupid. They dont use there brain for anything (except playing game consoles) and the influence of there friends at shool is the largest influence they have (and we all know what that means).

So i take a talk with him why its bad to watch it and blocked it anyway cause he would accept "yes it is bad for me but i dont care i have a wood in the pantys and want to cool down!"

Children are Children, even when the most adult today are still children from a psychical few, doesn´t that mean that i have to treat children like they were adult.

Sure the block is not the right way at all. But then you would say "Forbit to kill someone and take a good talk instead" too and we all know that humanity is stupid. Most people, walking on this earth, are just so amazingly stupid that you dont have a other choose than block this pages.

But my cousin accepted that the block is good for its own and accepted it so i think i made a good job smile

Re: Porn list to block

Network manager -> add connection -> "available to all users" (in the bottom, near "cancel", "apply"). This way it will be a "root protected" connection. And take it out from network group, otherwise he'll be able to create a new connection (poor kid... sad).

Good job wink.

But really, watching porn movies ain't a really bad thing. Actually, in a non-deviated society, a 12 years old kid should almost be ready to have a sexual rapport (eg: knowing the anatomy and functionality of the reproductive organs). Instead we try to keep our children/teenager away from sex for as long as possible, giving them the idea that sex is a bad and dirty thing, whereas is the most natural and genuine instinct we have been left in our life. But i'm a bit of a hippie, i know..

Re: Porn list to block

I agree with patrick about using /etc/hosts but that's just me. Although it's difficult to keep up with every site out there, there's a list already made up with more than enough.. http://hostsfile.mine.nu/ And I use a script to update it: http://github.com/milomouse/code/blob/master/shell/adup Just an idea, anyways. Some sites aren't even reported as having adult content so they'll still get by most conventional methods.
