Jabber users in arch community

I wonder if there are people that use the jabber on here? I know many people use IRC, but would also like to extend my contacts in jabber.org!

And if you do not have an acc on jabber, tell me why?

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I use it regulary. Had lots of contacts but most of them switched back to wlm (and facebook).

You "need" wlm alongside with it for the rest of your contacts, and your jabber contacts most likely have a wlm account too, so it's kind of pointless unless you visit MUC chatrooms or find peaplo who don't have / want to use wlm accounts.

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I have a jabber acc (see profile). I got it because I bought into the FUD about the ICQ terms of service. I even tried to get people to convert to jabber (with, uh… moderate success).

Anyways, I don't wanna miss it now. I like it.

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I got hooked by a friend some 5-6 years ago. It's still my main IM protocol, and I use it for various things, but also for work related communication. Also when using Jabber transports to connect to other networks from my perspective everyone IS using Jabber (about as close as will ever be ;^).

You need to install an RTFM interface.

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I have an account, but I rarely use IM: mostly I use twitter/identica for pinging people and having short conversations.

I like jabber because it is an open protocol and, as anrxc says. you can connect to most people through it...

Oh yes, that's so true!
I only have ONE non linux user in my jabber account list and I have him only because I told him that he already has a jabber account because of his gmx.de mail account. So always when he's checking mails I see him online and it even happened once that he went online to chat with me big_smile That's a funny dude, no mobile phone, no IM (I'm the only one he ever chatted with) ... He's doing it kinda right, don't you think? ;-)
The other guys in my jabber contact list are linux users, whom I know 5 in person and the rest are Arch users.

Feel free to add me
army@jabber.ccc.de

And of course my main chat protocoll is oscar / icq ... like Runiq said, in Germany that's by far the mostly used protocol. Although many users switched completely to facebook chat ...

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I don't have many contacts, but i use Jabber mainly. I used to have (well, still have just not connect) an icq account (as said above, icq being the most used in Germany) but someday i just swapped to Jabber and told people either they come to Jabber to or not tongue (Not that i did talk alot with them before, they were mostly those kinds of "Hey you were in the same school as me!" But then, i'm the kind of person who doesn't have a Facebook account either wink )
I like Jabber as it is opensource, but for one it's xml, ew, and i still find irc more useful than IM.

+1 for Jabber ( muunleit@jabber.linuxlovers.at ), but even how hard I try tongue, I can't get people switching from ICQ to Jabber. sad

Personally, my jabber is colin@evaryont.me, self hosted. Jabber does support delegation, similar to OpenID, so you can use your own domain (Jabber delegation requires DNS SRV records access) while using another hosted service.

If you want to follow my route and host your own jabber server, take a look at how I compiled and configured Jabberd2, a light weight jabber server.

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I've been using Jabber almoust 4 years now. I have nearly a hundred contacts, so it's kinda common amongs my friends, because of me I guess. big_smile

Pretty much every GNU/Linux user I know of uses it.

hum... gtalk, jabber are xmpp? or jabber is another "protocol" (noob network tech. here uu')

btw...

since the topic has received so many replys wanted to know if the community has some room to some jabber server xD

perhaps nothing can surpass the 800 + online IRC channel, but I do not think something bad or too expensive to create a more "new" media using a new technology?

I like Jabber, but I don't really use it; I'm forced to use MSN, since 99% use it here.

Heh, yeah, GTalk uses Jabber AND XMPP, and Jabber is XMPP. XMPP is just a transmission protocol, like HTTP, except it uses XML messages. Jabber uses XML messages to send chat messages, online status notifications, etc, to each server/user. Also, there is some voice and video capabilities. XMPP also allows much greater possibilities. It's a... "dumb" protocol, I guess? It doesn't care about the content you use. It just takes a XML, sends it to the server, and is done with it. Jabber is the poster child, but you can use XMPP for other things, like a pub/sub model. (Which Jabber uses as well... hah)

There was a previous topic, can't find it now, that also sparked interest in a Jabber/Arch community, they even created a MUC (Multi-User Chatroom). I don't know what happened to it after that. To be honest, if you want to take on the IRC channel, good luck. smile

Re: Jabber users in arch community

I created a jabber account last year I think, and I have a grand total of 0 contacts. I'll probably use it exclusively one of these days (years?), but I hardly chat, so it won't do much good. BUT if I were to start chatting more, I would use it.

Of course I know that :-P It's one of my accounts I use in bitlbee. So people think I'm always on facebook *lol* But I hardly visit the site, once a day max. But it's no "real" jabber, they don't have any encryption, you can only add contacts from within facebook etc. and they only have a jabber frontend for their internal chat protocol. So all the freedoms of jabber are lost here. Still I find it very nice, that the facebook chat can be connected to by jabber. The only other social website which I know offering such a possibility is a german site named lokalisten.de, but afaik they offer a REAL jabber account.
