No xdisplay after upgrade to xorg1.8 and nvidia256.35-1

Well, I held off upgrading for a while but decide to take the plunge last night.

Now, I have no xdisplay.  I can log into the console and everthing seems fine, but when I run startx, the display just goes away. After I kill the x session, video comes back on for the console.

This is my HTPC, with a nvidia Geforce 9300 on board video.  I was using the hdmi output with no problems until I upgraded.

I've added a 10-monitor.conf under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ per the new xorg instructions.

I've removed everything but exec xterm from my .xinitrc.

But I don't get anything.

I don't see anything bad in my xorg log.  It seems to find the device and recognizes my tv as samsung.

Any idea what went wrong?

Thanks,
  Jeremy

Re: No xdisplay after upgrade to xorg1.8 and nvidia256.35-1

Are you sure you got the right video driver? What were you updating? Were you using xorg-server 1.7 or older before the upgrade?

Re: No xdisplay after upgrade to xorg1.8 and nvidia256.35-1

I did a pacman -Syu to upgrade everything to current.  I had a xorg-server 1.7.XX version installed before the update. As the video driver should be right I updated this, Ver 256 replaced Ver 195. The onboard video is nvidia Geforce 9300 which is a fairly recent model and listed as supported by 256.

I hadn't updated this machine in a while, so ~300 pakages were updated.

Re: No xdisplay after upgrade to xorg1.8 and nvidia256.35-1

[ 2160.736] (WW) NVIDIA(0): 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals require the Composite extension.
[ 2160.736] (WW) NVIDIA(0): Disabling 32-bit ARGB GLX visuals.

Maybe try to disable the thing that's causing the errors - compositing?

Run 'nvidia-xconfig' and see if there are any errors, then check if you have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf:

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "nvidia"
   VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

it should just work.

Re: No xdisplay after upgrade to xorg1.8 and nvidia256.35-1

I removed all the configuration files and reran nvidia-xconfig again to generate generic versions.  The hdmi still doesn't work.  I was able to connect via a D-sub VGA connection, this displays just fine.  Seems it specific to the hdmi.  Maybe the new driver broke hdcp or something.

Unfortuanatly I'm leaving on vacation tommorow morning so I won't be able to look at this much more until next week. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I may try installing the nvidia beta from aur, or the open source version to see what happens.

Ah, so it's not as bad as I initially thought. Unfortunately I'm not a nvidia-hdmi guru so I won't be of much help here, but Google might know the answers.

Have fun on your vacations.
