Arch MMO discussion

Anyone know of a MMO that lives up to the Arch tradition? That is, a RPG or something that is not bloated with dungeons and other premade content. Ideally, something in which you can just grow and customize a toon, and engage in some PVP. It doesn't have to be Linux native, I would prefer something that is fully developed, and runs well on wine.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

How about a MUD? I played Avalon for a bit on Slackware when I was in college.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

eve. definitely not a lot of premade content, the world (including the entire market) is completely player run. You're competing directly with other players and not a computer system whenever you buy/sell anything, or start wanting your own space. Lots of politics between the different corps/alliances out there as well.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

Hey,

Can't play text-based but your suggestion led me to the answer when I looked up muds on wikipedia and found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison … quirements

Ragnarok is the most lightweight 3D MMO listed weighing in at only 1.67 GB. It says Second Life only requires 75 MB but I have to wonder about that. Plus, it's not really a game, more of a 3D chatroom...

What do you think?

Second Life streams textures, models, sounds, etc as you move around. The base program only takes 75MB, but with all the user stuff you can easily end up downloading several gigabytes.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

Sounds like Guild Wars would meet that criteria.  It's largely focused on field and build strategy, both in PvP and PvE rather than on grinding through meaningless dungoeons and whatnot.

The low level cap and ease of obtaining large amounts of skills allows a pllayer to customize their character in huge numbers of ways fairly early in the game, so it becomes more about the game mechanics themselves than about ticking off a list of quests to do or zones to complete.

Ryzom - works well in WINE and you can customise every skill you earn.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

Thank you for the suggestions.

I'm going to try Regnum but if it's a wacky wack game

I might try purchasing guild wars

Follow up:

The answer was Guild Wars

Regnum was a horrible game -
poorly coded, laggy, awful performance, tacky and kludged together in hopes of getting people to pay... insulting.
They cannot get a penny out of me and I could not stop imagining while 'playing' this how such horrid programming might be abrasive to my beautiful Arch system.

GW is the diametric opposite. Polished, attractive, fun. Last night was day 1 of my free trial and I have already upgraded my account and look forward to upgrading my partners. Best money ever spent on a game. I actually like this game more than WoW. Come to find on wikipedia that the company was founded by former Blizzard developers who made WC3, my next favorite game now after this one, no wonder !

Re: Arch MMO discussion

Guildwars is awesome. Just got a toon to 19. Only thing that bugs me so far is an occassional crash to desktop. I'm dying for GW2, hoping it is wine friendly.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

I used to love Ryzom back when I used Windows. It would be great to play it again now. Never had any grief on there the whole time I played, and met a lot of friendly people too. I really like the art style too. I miss my toon sad

I only crashed when running the game in compiz.

XFCE seems to be the best window manager for playing wine games, and will continue running, where compiz or metacity will crash.

Abode products though seem to run better in compiz.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

Few years ago I used to play Knight Online. It was great mmo with arcade pk system, where skilled player with lower lvl and inferior equimpent coud kill one with higher lvl and much better eq. It's not only pressing 222333567731, but a lot more complicated.
Unfortunately this game is crap now. 90% of players are turkish cheaters who don't speak english at all. Even the official website is both in english and turkish.
I really miss that game. Back in 2004 it was really awesome. Lot's of helpful people, almost no cheats and everyone was speaking english.

Now I'm going to try Requiem: Memento Mori. Friend of mine says it's awesome game and from what I heard it works decent on wine.

Re: Arch MMO discussion

I recommend EVE, as well, like the poster above me.

It's very "simple," yet can be "complex" if you want to spend the time on it, get sovereignty in a system, etc.

As an added bonus it works amazingly well on Arch with wine...no problems with patches or anything.
