This step always fails with the error "Pacman preparation failed!". tty7 shows the error
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed to update core (no servers configured for repository)
error: failed to synchronize any databases
Now I emptied the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file and added few working mirrors from this link https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorSt … y;sort=asc
After this I was able to do a pacman -Sy in another terminal and even upgrade pacman to 3.4.0-2. Obviously my internet connection is working at this point and pacman is working when run manually. I fail to understand why the aif installer is repeatedly failing as above. Can someone please help?
Thanks.

What did the mirrorlist look like before you emptied it? You need to uncomment at least one server IIRC.

It was the original mirrorlist that came on the distro boot image. I got the same error before modifying the file. Reading some other posts about how mirrors are not synced or unavailable could cause similar issues, I just kept 3 servers in the file that I believe are working and they are uncommented.

I tested with the i686 boot image instead of the x86_64 and same issue. I am installing this on a thinkpad x61. I had to setup ifconfig and route manually as eth0 was not brought up after boot. But the thing is that if I run pacman in another terminal manually it works, I can sync, upgrade. But the select packages step fails from aif as above.

Fixed it finally. I realized I was skipping the step of "Choose a Mirror" in the "Select Source" menu because I had to configure my network manually to make it work. So I was just selecting type of install as Net and quitting out of the sub-menu without select mirror. Aif does not like that and fails in the select packages step later although the mirrorlist file is ok.
