[SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

Hi,

I have new an Acer Timelinex 4820T laptop, but network isn't working. I've installed Archlinux 2009.08 x86_64, kernel 2.6.30-ARCH

Here some hints to figure out the problem...

#lspci | grep -i ethernet
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Device 1073 (rev c0)

so i'm using Atheros based ethernet cards smile

#zgrep -i atl1e /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_ATL1E=m

so it's already built as a module

is it already loaded?

#lsmod | grep -i atl1e
atl1e 39108 0

yes, now i'm trying again to start network

#/etc/rc.d/network restart
Stopping Network FAIL
Starting Network BUSY
dhcpcd: eth0: interface not found or invalid
dhcpcd: time out
#ifconfig -a
lo Link encap:Local Loopback ..
bla bla..

i have no eth0

is there any idea for this problem?

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

Did you check dmesg for any possible errors?

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

Yes,

# dmesg | grep -i ethernet
# dmesg | grep -i eth0
# dmesg | grep -i network
Initalizing network drop monitor service
# dmesg | grep -i atl1e
# dmesg | grep -i interface
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs
usbcore: registered new interface driver hub
Linux video capture interface: v2.00
usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo

is it meaningful?

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

I'm checking your dmesg output. You should really update your installation before we can reliably diagnose your problem. Arch is at kernel 2.6.34 now... Can you update the system using wireless?

You should use the latest installation image, the one you used is a bit outdated.

http://www.archlinux.org/download/

If you read this topic, it appears the newer kernel should fix your problem. 2010.05 has 2.6.33.4 which should have support for your NIC. A bit of googling would have given you that solution as well wink.

Commit that adds support for your card: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … 578393cfe0

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

i've already tried Archlinux 2010.05 but i didnt work too. New version of vi editor is really weird and graphic driver is unstable but I still continued with the installation and network again was down. There is no interface like wlan0 or eth0 so i cant download any package to fix it. Everything must be done offline.

I think i need AR8151 driver so i'll try the solution which is given at below link.

Maybe compat-wireless is an easy way to get your network working, if support was added on later kernels.

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

I would stick with 2010.05 either way, then we can start troubleshooting from there. Either way, you'll have to run an upgrade at some point, and you stand a better chance with a newer kernel than with an old one. 2.6.30 is two years old.

Could you paste lspci -n output for your NIC? It should print 1969:1073.

The topic you link to suggests you'd need 2.6.34 or higher, and 2.6.34.2 is in the repos.

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

hoobastank,

I had a similar problem with an ASUS PC N61JQ-JX001V with an Attansic Tech Device 1063 (rev 03) after installing Archlinux 2009.08 (i686).

After that the eth0 disappeared and the only way to recover it was to take out the power + battery (!) from the laptop for some
seconds.

I know its weird, but it is reported on the web, only I can't find it anymore.

I've just installed 2010.05 x86_64 but you know it includes Kernel: 2.6.33.4

I've tired to install kernel 2.6.34.2 to port modified driver but it gives me some error about dependencies linux-firmware etc. Years ago, once i had installed a software and all of it's dependencies step by step... I was a newbie at that time so I was very patient smile

Re: [SOLVED] Attansic Network Controller is not workig

Just install linux-firmware as well? There should not be many more dependencies to follow. Or boot the newest archboot image (unofficial, 2,6.34.1)  to reinstall or update from a chroot, or get  compat-wireles, or...

Yes you are right.. I've just installed 2010.07 which has kernel 2.6.34.1 and surprisingly it installed the correct module atl1c for Attansic Device 1073. In the former version of Archlinux, 2010.05, it installed atl1e module as a default. in fact I changed it to atl1c but did not work and again there was no ethernet interface eth0. There is something wrong with it, and i think this is a good puzzle to learn something but i dont have too much time so i choose easy way to solve.

Thank you very much.

The problem is SOLVED..
