I debated posting this in Programming or Community Contributions. Seeing as this would benefit all of Linux, however, I thought this was a better place. If I have erred, feel free to correct me.
I'm a long-time user of Linux, but my contributions sum up to answering a few questions now and then on one forum or another. I would love to give back to the community. I honestly don't think I could come up with an idea for a program and code it all on my own, so I was hoping to revive an old, potentially very buggy project that's been left to rot by its devs.
Right now, I'm downloading the source to Silver Tree, an RPG completely forgotten by the devs of Wesnoth. I would like to try my hand with something that isn't a game, however. Language doesn't matter - once you know one, you can easily program in quite a handful of others.
Now it's about time to reach the point of this post. What program can you just not live without that hasn't had an update for a while?
Perhaps a better question is "What dead program would you potentially use if it were less buggy?"

Not dead, but slow to go is Synergy+. I frequently use many computers at my desk, and to use a single keyboard and mouse across all of them is just awesome.

Package managers meant for LFS systems.
I'm pretty sure I've had or have a list going on what I like/use, but seeing that they're dead or slow to develop; I've pretty much forgotten where that list has gone off to. Irony, I suppose, haha.

Portage?

Like Portage, but well, deader.
Things like paco, installwatch, sppm, install-log, etc.

Oh no, I was suggesting you use portage for LFS

You guys actually gave me the idea of modifying pacman and makepkg for LFS or some such. Pacman can download a PKGBUILD instead of a .pkg.tar.xz and pull code from an svn or something before building it.
I doubt my coding skills are up to snuff, however.

You might want to look at pacbuilder for any ideas or code.

Oh my mistake. I never even knew Portage could be ported to an LFS system.

The reason I'm interested in package managers is because I'm planning to code my own for said LFS system, (and in addition it'll be a great coding exercise).

Anything that works on one distro works on another. Except tacos, Arch specializes in that...

Oh wow! I've actually heard of that game. Haven't played it in a while though.

Yes it does. All you need is to #include <cstdio> in rtb-team-framework/io/unixoutstreambuf.cpp. Now that I know the game works, I'll get to work on some of the bugs.
Actually, there aren't any. The two non-spam, open bug reports on the tracker don't appear to exist now.
I pulled the code from the RealTimeBattleNew module, if you're interested.
