Intel HDA audio dies on certain sounds

I've been searching all over for info on this problem that I've been having, and have not been able to find any mention of it anywhere.

I have a Lenovo U350 laptop that has an Intel HDA audio chip.  Linux detects it just fine and loads the snd_hda_intel module, and audio works.  The problem is that at certain times the sound will just shut off completely and the only way to get it back is to unload and reload the snd_hda_intel module (or just reboot the machine).  The trigger that seems to make the audio stop seems to be related to certain sounds being played when the volume is turned up all the way, as if the sound experiences clipping and then abruptly crashes.

A few more things:
* Most of the time having the volume up all the way is no problem.  Only on certain parts of songs or videos does the sound abruptly stop.  One video that consistently causes this every time is this video on youtube, right when the beatboxing kicks in:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE-JN7_rxtE
* This problem is not specific to any player or format.  It happens with flash video, avi files, etc.
* I've monitored log files at the moment the sound stops (using tail -f), and no error messages are being output at all.

I've run the alsa-info.sh script from the Alsa project's web site, so this should contain all the diagnostic info available:

Re: Intel HDA audio dies on certain sounds

You seem to be trying to use some equalizer plugin, it is not essential I believe, you just need to use dmix to get sound output with more than one program at a time.

Maybe a very loud sound is triggering a bug in the algorithm used in the equalizer plugin and making alsa crash .... just a guess.

Re: Intel HDA audio dies on certain sounds

As far as I know, I am not using any equalizer program.  Is there something in the alsa info that you see might indicate that there is an equalizer?

Also, just to clarify: I can get sound from more than one program at a time.  That isn't the problem.

Actually, I have been thinking something similar to your last comment: a loud sound is triggering a bug that causes an alsa crash.  But I am surprised that I haven't been able to find any mention of this on any forums or bug reports.

Re: Intel HDA audio dies on certain sounds

I'm not very familiar with all the options you can use in asound.conf but "type equal" does seem to suggest that you are trying to use some sort of equalizer plugin.

I use pulseaudio now, so I don't need much in asound.conf and so I don't use dmix, to use dmix I guess you should only need something like:

pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave{
        pcm "dmix"
    }
}

At least it works just fine here with just that.

Re: Intel HDA audio dies on certain sounds

With Intel HDA, the Intel chip is only half the solution.  The other half is the codec chip on the back end.  The Intel HDA streams a digital stream to the codec, which then converts it to analog audio, Digital Audio (Coax / fiber), HDMA, Modem sounds, etc...  The problem could be on the codec side.

You might look under /proc/asound/card0  at the codec#n files.  Each will tell you about the chip used for that codec and what are its capabilities.  In my case I've three codecs -- Analog audio provided by an IDT 92HD71B7X, a second that handles the modem and a third for HDMI.

This codec information may help with your Google search.  You might, if there are other codecs available, try using an alternate output.  Example: If you have HDMI, and a TV with HDMI capability, you could try pumping your audio through that pipe and see if you have the same problem.
