Laptop fan completely inactive.

It was working in ubuntu a few days ago before I switched to arch. Everything else works great, including cpu scaling and suspend to RAM. CPU temp is around 45º idle, but that's with the ondemand governor. Before I installed that it was sitting at 50º+ idle, which is insane. I followed the instructions at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ACPI_modules.

The laptop is a Dell Latitude D630.

Any ideas?

Re: Laptop fan completely inactive.

50 degrees is quite normal for a mobile Core2Duo, 100 degrees is roughly the thermal maximum for these processors.

My Macbook Pro also runs between 45 and 50 degrees idle, and goes up to 80 before the fan really kicks in.

Core 2 Duo T5600 @ my Compal Hel80 also had average CPU temperature ~50 degrees, but never reached 80. Depends a lot on manufacturer's BIOS settings.

Yeah. if your fan was really inactive it wouldn't be able to keep it as low as 50º when idle. I think that's a quite reasonable temperature. What temperatures did you have in Ubuntu?
