Short freezes, 100% CPU from X process

I'm having trouble figuring this issue out.

While switching windows in KDE or doing other similar tasks, X hits 100% and I get a frozen screen for about 5-7 seconds.  This happens with high regularity: if I open kmail from the systray, it will freeze the first time.  If I wait 1 minute and try again, the same thing happens.  I'm having trouble identifying the cause of this problem, though I recently switched to an ext4 filesystem in a new HD (was previously on ext3) using rsync.  I'm running a lenovo thinkpad T61 with everything intel except for the nvidia Quadro nvs 140m graphics card.

Can someone help me figure this out?  It makes using my desktop extremely irritating.

Re: Short freezes, 100% CPU from X process

Update: installing and running compiz-fusion solves this problem, so I think it's kwin acting up.  I don't know how to solve the issue permanently, though.
