I upgraded a bunch of packages on my system last night and restarted. Since then, no program at all can play sounds on my system.
I don't know which package specifically could have caused it but here's my pacman log showing everything I updated:

My sound worked fine before that. I'm running KDE 4.4.5. I pulled up alsamixer to verify that all my channels are unmuted and turned up and spotted nothing wrong there. I played with KDE's multimedia settings but again nothing helped.
How can I get my sound back? I really need it for a bunch of things...

My bet is that it was the kernel upgrade that did it. Is it all of your programs that don't play sound? (Something like Chromium may not work, but mplayer might)

As far as I know no sound works at all.
Programs that previously had sound and don't now:
- TeamSpeak 3
- Chrome
- VLC
- Dragon Player
- Several games in Wine

Have you tried running alsaconf (as root) to see if that helps? Which hardware are you using?

What happens if you downgrade your kernel? Could you try that and see if we can find where the problem is?
EDIT: Or try what loafer said above

Running alsaconf seems to have solved the problem, thank you very much

Erm, un-solving this
It worked for a while but I had to run alsaconf on every restart to make it work. Now, I did another large update (including another kernel update) and my sound no longer works again even after running alsaconf.

got the same problem here. tried everything on wiki(Alsa), still no luck. maybe we should look forward to next kernel update?

I had a same problem, but I've solved more details here:

Long story short, go to system settings ->multimedia->phonon and check your settings also tick show advanced options or something similar to this...
Then use the device you have; in my case it's HDA nVidia digital S/PDIF. In your case it's probably just digital.
Also try other backends, for me VLC is the best, while xine sometimes works and sometimes doesn't and gstreamer completely fails.
P.S.: I do use kernel26-ck, so it might actually be a kernel problem and I don't know about it. But still you can at least try this.
