Awesome needs xrender

I am running what I hope to be a headless machine, with Awesome.  It works fine locally, but when I connect using tightvnc, it looks terrible and the text is unreadable.  I am told that problem stems from the X server I'm using not having access to xrender.  Why is tightvnc not allowed to use xrender, and is there any way for me to remedy that?
