Video stream processing in C - Where to start?

I'm trying to write a C program that takes a PCAP dump with a video stream in it and outputs some information about the video, like bitrate, codec, etc.  I'm in unfamiliar territory here, so I don't really know where to look.

Are there any standard/good libraries for processing flv's, mp4's, etc.?  Any suggestions for how to approach the problem?
