good evening, is there a command that recognize hdd connected with sata without having to reboot every time i open them?

specifically i have 2 hdd that are connected with sata. the one is with a docking station and the other with an icybox. when i open them for linux to see them i have to reboot.
also i have another docking station that it is connected with esata and this one it see's without having to reboot when i open it.

how do i do the above with the connection of the 2 sata without having to reboot everytime i open the button?

Re: recognizing sata without reboot

I assume you mean eS-ATA? You can run

udevadm monitor

and watch its output as you connect your eS-ATA devices. I have no problem using eS-ATA devices.

Recent S-ATA devices should also be hotpluggable (technically at least), but I am not sure how that works.

Re: recognizing sata without reboot

i know the difference between the 2 smile
thats why i seperate them bringing the example with the other docking station that has esata

my motherboard has 1 esata port so i ve got an adapter giving me 2 sata ports behind that are connected with the internal sata's.

Re: recognizing sata without reboot

Icy Box and docking stations are external devices; I don't know how it works if they are using regular S-ATA. I know my Icy Box uses eS-ATA or USB though smile.

i agree with you. the one that i mention that is es-ata is docking station icybox smile that works fine

i have 3 external devices that are:

IB-110StUS2-B x 2
http://www.raidsonic.de/en/products/det … ectID=6158

and
IB-351StUS-B
http://www.raidsonic.de/en/products/ext … ectID=6136

now the first 2 that has es-ata i have connect one of them as i mention at es-ata port that i have

and the other one with the other third device i have connect them to "external" sata ports that are actually internal sata and they just give me outside ports from behind.

Hmm... ensure that your sata disks operate in AHCI mode - you can change this setting in BIOS. Also you must use power connector with +3.3, +5 and +12V. Cables with only 5 and 12V are not sufficient to do a hot-swap.

ok....

i have no idea what do you mean with that....

A my motherboard doesnt have choice AHCI or RAID

B what does it mean hot-swap? like the external device with the es-ata cable does?something like plug and play style?

ps:all 3 devices are connected with external power

Yes. Something like that but not exactly Pnp devices can't be connected when pc is working. Of course apart from monitor, keyboard etc.

P.S. I was wrong. 3.3V is not needed for hot-swap but AHCI is.

EDIT:

What motherboard (exact model) do you have?

i have P5KC  (http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=fFZ8oUIGmLpwNMjj)

so reading that i cannot do what i want to do? meaning open or close this device with the hdd whenever i want if the pc is already open? neither the device that it is with esata cable?

Your motherboard has AHCI mode. See page 84 (pdf) or 4-14 of manual.

Re: recognizing sata without reboot

What is sata set to? I imagine it needs to be set to "enhanced" before you can then select ahci.
