Having issues with WM/slim

My real issue is not fixing my mistake (getting a failed to execute login command), but how I can get back to the command-line. I set up my machine to auto start slim, and I cant seem to find a way to edit my files now.

Also, this is my first time ever installing Arch. I got xfce to work really well, but wanted to try some of the other options. Great documentation!  I have a feeling I just fucked up my .xinitrc file or something, which I can probably fix if I can get back to it!

Thanks for any help smile

TLDR: Stuck at SLiM log-in (it defaults when arch boots), need to get back to a state where I can edit files

Ctrl+Alt+F1 should bring you into a terminal console. Ctrl+Alt+F7 gets you back into X.

Ctrl-Alt-F{1-6} will give you a console...

This was my first option that I tried. Let me give that another try. I was getting a blank screen before. I wonder if I have to blindly turn off x or something?

EDIT: getting blank screen.

Re: Having issues with WM/slim

It sounds like a graphics card issue - possibly KMS-related. Either that, or you really b0rked your inittab file when you set up SLiM.

In any event, you can get to terminal by booting into runlevel 1 and then editing whatever conf files you need to.

This thread may offer some pointers: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=97810

Try a kernel option. Start the computer, hit an arrow key when grub comes up, go back to your default entry, hit e for edit, and again e on the kernel line, and at the end put a 1, then enter and b for boot.
That should bring you to runlevel 1 without X.

Im going to try the same exact configuration, but not have SLiM auto start. I think ill definitely learn what I did wrong smile The whole point was to try and get back to the files where I messed up.

I got impatient and went with starting over. (will be only my second time installing arch so it will be fun anyway)  Thanks for the reply, I can see myself needing that in the future.
