How do i take over an "outdated" package in the AUR?

I'd like to take over the "buzztard" package in the AUR because the maintainer hasn't updated it and yaourt isn't able to install the package correctly.

Can I take over?

Post to aur-general mailing list. But before that try to contact the maintainer via mail and ask him to update or orphan the package.
