Droid webcam works in xawtv but not in skype

I used placaware.com to get my Droid Eris to work as a USB webcam. After some work (editing the lines that said #include /qt4/QtNetwork/QAbstractSocket to just say #include QAbstract Socket helped it make), success when running  xawtv -c /dev/video1

In skype, testing the video shows only a grey screen, though. It recognizes that it should be looking at /dev/video1.
I've tried this both with and without xawtv running, and when xawtv is running, it goes to a dark blue or black screen when skype tries to use the webcam and back to normal after. I've tried running export LD_PRELOAD= /usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so before running skype in xterm but it doesn't help.

Any ideas? Want help getting your droid to work in xawtv but not skype too?
