System not responding to PCM volume change

I installed OSS to try it out (I'd like per-application volume settings), but I had issues with my microphone and speakers. After reinstalling ALSA, changing PCM volume no longer affects the volume of anything. I saw an error message while rebooting that said something about Dmix not being able to set the PCM slave, or something of the like. I don't remember changing any configuration files for ALSA. What can I do?

EDIT: Some additional information: Neither Firefox (flash video) or MPD seem to respond to changes in PCM volume, while Skype does. I'm using the 32bit version of Skype, as I have a 64bit system.
