Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

The summary says it all. I don't want my PDFs to be opened with GIMP instead of Evince, etc.

Are there any fixes for that behavior?

Like how?

Is your problem like; installing  (epdfviewer)? and then setting firefox to use that, and when it comes time, it doesn't?

Or, more info please... wink

Well, to be more precise: Firefox doesn't use the same program for opening files, as I've configured in GNOME.

Re: Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

Does the problem reoccur when you restart after setting the default application for viewing the files?

Sex is not the answer.

Sex is the question, and Yes is the answer.

Yes, it does. The problem is permanent.

Re: Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

I am a little confused (as I think Ari'osika was):

Have you set default applications in Firefox or just in Gnome?

In Firefox, go to menu Edit -> Preferences and make your settings on the Applications tab.

Hope this helps
Munky

Re: Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

Well, Applications tab doesn't contain entries for all possible mime types, for example, there is no entry for JPG, and Firefox opens JPG in Wine's Internet Explorer (sic!).

What I want is to make Firefox respect what I've configured already in GNOME.
I think this needs a patch or something (something like patches for KDE integration, but for GNOME instead).

Re: Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

I agree that it should respect global (ie: DE/WM) settings...

ps - Firefox Applications tab does have a  JPEG file entry (at least in 3.6.8)

Re: Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

Install from AUR mozplugger and edit /etc/mozpluggerrc. This file has all mime types configuration for Firefox.

Re: Firefox uses wrong programs to open downloaded files.

I use both KDE and Gnome, so Firefox decided to use KDE applications by default.

I edited /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache and changed the order around a bit, e.g:
I changed

application/pdf=kde4-okularApplication_pdf.desktop;gimp.desktop;evince.desktop;

to

application/pdf=evince.desktop;kde4-okularApplication_pdf.desktop;gimp.desktop;

Another example:
From:

application/x-gzip=kde4-ark.desktop;file-roller.desktop;

To:

application/x-gzip=file-roller.desktop;kde4-ark.desktop;

It was a bit of a shot in the dark, but it seems to have worked.

Edit: I've just tested Firefox in KDE and it now wants to use evince and file-roller... Oh well, but al least it could still work for the OP.
