KDE: "Cannot connect to sound server"

Yep, it's another "sound woes" post. Flee while ye can...

I finally stuck in my trusty Ensonique 1371, because I was getting even more grief from my onboard sound - all sorts of weird squealing and squeaking, despite Cactus' fix. So now the Ensonique is snd-card-0, my CD audio connector thingamabob (no, I don't know the technical term for it :oops: ) is hooked up properly, and the snd-via82xx module is on hotplug's blacklist... But my sound woes are not over.

You see, I installed KDE... And now, when I boot into it, I get the error message "Cannot connect to default: sound server is busy. Sound will be rerouted to null output." I can configure ARTS to use ALSA, I can configure it to use JACK, whatever... But I still get the same error message, except that whatever server I specified replaces "default" in the message.

Yes, I've got the right  channels unmuted. Yes, I did that with KMix, and also used alsamixer just to be sure.

On my old box, the IBM FrankenPC that I have condemned to the basement, this sound card never gave me problems. It's the same hardware as before; so why does Linux sound support suck so much all of the sudden? :?

Okay... Just removed Ensonque 1371 and switched back to onboard sound to see if that will work. It doesn't... Yes, I configured all the channels right. KDE just gives me this stupid "cannot connect to sound server" error on startup... WTF is this about? Is this a KDE problem or something? Does ARTS suck?

Are you sure the device (DevFS/Udev) permissions are set right?

Permissions set properly... Yep, I'm in the audio group too.

Okay, solved. I think that last uDev upgrade knocked me out of the audio group or something... :? Anyway, I added myself to the audio group and swapped jackd for ALSA alone. Now sound works fine.

(Of course, Noatun's sound output sucks something awful... Same with Juk and Kaboodle. I'll have to use Cactus' fix for via82xx.)

Im having the same problem w/ my Nforce2 chipset can any one explain the fix a little better, I'm still a little green when it comes to linux.
