Dear Archers
Recently installed 2010.05 ArchLinux base iso. When I updated by -Syu command, it asked me a question: Replace ...gz with....xz?
I said yes. Update completed.
Now, I still am yet to install gnome etc.
When I give -Sy command, it searches and says core.db.tar.gz not fond. could not update core.
What should I do to make it search for .xz pkg?
I checked in pacman.conf, but did not find anything that could be edited for this purpose. pl help

Did you merge the .pacnew files?

I do not know what you mean by 'merge'
But, yes, I moved mirrorlist.pacnew to mirrorlist and rc.conf.pacnew to rc.conf.
If this is not 'merging', pl. explain what needs to be done

Is there any mirror uncommented (without ->#) in mirrorlist ?

The error you get does not concern the move from gzip to xz. It talks about the databases, and afaik they're still gzipped (I think changes have been made to support other compression formats for the database tarballs in the future though).

No, there are no uncommented mirrors. I myself have uncommented the mirrors for India

Try changing mirrors and then run pacman -Syy.

The trouble was in the mirror list, there was double dollar $$arch instead of $arch. For every mirror. God knows how. i deleted one $. OK.
But there is now another peculiar problem. I was able to install gnome.
when I try to install 'gnome-extra', it lists the package list, and while downloading, for some packages it says 'No address record'.
Pl. suggest what must be the problem

Switch to some other mirror and see if the problem re-occurs.
