request to up config_nr_cpu to 24 or 32 for default kernel?

Hello, I've got a xeon system with 2 procs, each 6 cores, 2 threads per core.
Using the standard arch-64 kernel the system shows 16 effective cpus instead of 24.

Since the newer westmere based xeons are available, can we increase config_nr_cpu to 24 or 32?

I suspect AMD has similar configurations. Apologies in advance if this topic has been covered before, search did not show anything.
