I have just made a fresh install of archlinux (x86_64) on my new pc and it seems the comic lasmid doesn't work as it should be: I can install new comics but they do not appear on the list of my list of available items. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug with this plasmoid?

We are getting the same thing here. I think it is a bug with installing comics on KDE 4.5. If you have a KDE 4.4 install with properly installed comics, perhaps you can copy ~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma/comics and maybe it will work.

And you have made a fresh install (=no kde 4.4 installed before and upgraded), how could you solve this problem?

1) Fix the bug or see if it is fixed in trunk
2) Use a system with 4.4 or co-install 4.4 and install the comics you want and then copy the aforementioned folder
3) Ask someone who is using 4.4 to install the comics you want and upload their folder for you.
