After a reboot, xdm was letting me log in and it seemed to be doing something for about a second before dropping back to xdm.
After switching to another tty and logging in, I killed xdm and it's x session and ran startx to get this error message:
awesome: symbol lookup error: awesome: undefined symbol: cairo_xcb_surface_create
Rolling back cairo to 1.8.10-1 fixes this and allows me to log in correctly.
Do I need to fill out a bug report or anything else?

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Thanks Wonder
I am subscribed to arch-dev-public but I must have completely overlooked those messages!
I must pay more attention in future!
I'll give cairo-xcb a try

I had the same problem and this fixed it for me, just wanted to comment, i'm not using any testing repositories, so a heads up to everyone using stable versions would be nice.

Same here - I got the cairo-xcb error with i3lock from [community]. I think this is new since i3lock-2.0.
Is it kosher for [community] to depend on AUR? I know there are requirements with [core] dependencies, but do the other repos have similar requirements?
