Advices about graphic card choice (best supported in Arch) ?

Hello,
I was running a desktop with Arch and a nVidia 7900GS but recently, my 7900GS died sad
So I was looking for a new cheap graphic card who could decode 1080p and who have an HDMI port.

Somebody told me that the AMD HD 5450 could be a good choice, or the upcoming nVidia GT 430 could be a nice choice too

But what about the support of theses new hardware in Archlinux ?
Which of theses have the best drivers ? the best performances under Arch ?

Thank you for your support

only nvidia cards can decode 1080 using GPU trough vdpau. get a card supported by vdpau and that's it.

Nvidia Gefore 210 is more than enough: hdmi, gpu decoding 1080p, cheap, ...

+1 for an nvidia board w/ VDPAU decoding.  Linux and nVidia are a nice match.  I've had nothing but pain with my one and only experience with an ATI board.

sorry but we don't support in arch this kind of setup. to achieve it you need to use some unsupported repos made by some users (the easy way) or aur

Not the latest Optimus based cards though, nvidia have just as much as said "we won't support this on Linux in the foreseeable future", leaving purchasers of such laptops with a deadweight which only pulls power. All rendering is done through the Intel card....

You should go for any Nvidia card, but if ur on a budget then remember to buy a low end card of a higher(read newer) series. But if u want value for money, and ur an occasional windows gamer go for ATI. I have heard good things about the new linux catalyst driver, and gallium3d for evergreen(ati 5000 series) is here, so opensource scene is also looking good for ATI.

While there is progress on ATI drivers, both open and closed source, if you want thing working smoothly *now* as opposed to maybe sometime in the future, go Nvidia. If video playback is your only concern and you want to spend as little as possible, get a G210. If you want a little more oomph in the 3D department then idk, GT240 would probably do. If you have money, then GTX460. Especially in the hardware video decode department, VDPAU gives you an out-of-the box nicely working experience with stock Arch packages.
