I use xfce and lxdm to login. It takes xfce over a minute to load. The splash screen comes up for a second and then goes to a blank grey screen with a busy cursor. Once started, it is fast to use, but slow on startup. I only autostart xfce power manager and wicd. This problem seemed to suddenly appear about a week ago. I googled it, but no solutions worked for me. Please tell me if you need more info or for me to post a file. Thanks.

It seems like it just takes a long time to show the desktop. It seems that everything is running, the desktop just won't show. I have it set to dim the screen after 30 seconds, and it does that when I still have a blank screen and busy cursor, so everything is running, but not the desktop. Where should I look to find error messages?

It only takes roughly 5-10 seconds to load now. I have no idea why it started loading faster all of a sudden, but I am glad it works now.

i hope this isnt necro-bumping, but I am having this problem again. I installed lxde a while back and uninstalled xfce, but today I decided to go back to xfce and I have the slow start problem again. So, any ideas on how to fix it?

have you ever tried openbox?
lxde uses openbox. With openbox, you only install packages you need, and it is FAST. (warning: openbox is not a full DE.)
I made a guide for people new to arch to install openbox. it is for chinese user but the only differenece is that you dont need gcin, wqy-zenhei. (skip setup chinese environment part.)
if you think google translate is ok. please give it a try: http://tailinchu.tk/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=123

thanks, but i like eyecandy. i use compiz. i might install openbox to use sometimes if i need something to be really fast, though i'll probably stick to E17 for that purpose. Thanks, though.

Is it taking a long time because superfluous xfdesktop processes are being started? This happens to me sometimes and I don't know why but it always gets fixed when I clear out ~/.cache/xfce4 and ~/.cache/sessions.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

Thanks for the suggestion. I deleted ~/.chache/sessions , but ~/.cache/xfce4 didn't exist. unfortunately it did not help. Thanks anyways.
UPDATE: I still have this problem after the update to xfce 4.8 today. It just worked after another reboot. YAAAY
