I followed the instructions on "Installing with Software RAID or LVM" to create a system where there are two hard drives and one is a mirror of the other. Everything went fine, but I was hoping someone would clarify the line
# lvcreate --size 50G --name root array
Why not 40G, why not all free space?
What are the considerations here?
And if all I want is to back-up one hard drive to another to protect against physical failure, should I really concern myself with this?
Thank you, Britt

If all you need is a mirror, you don't need (and probably don't want) lvm.

Personally, I would go for 20GB for /, and the rest for /home, asuming this is a normal desktop setup. (and a /boot outside of the lvm2)
Though, with lvm2, if you use a filesystem that can be resized freely, it doesn't really matter, since you can change your partion scheme at any time, in any way you like.
