You are not logged in.
In fact, I would like to login from console mode (or be able to browse through the filesystem), to edit the /etc/rc.conf file, before the startup procedure runs the daemons.
How can I do that?

Add "single" to the kernel line in your bootloader.

Thank you for the quick replies. So there is my problem. I installed Arch on an old laptop with xfce. I had to interrupt for a while and then by mistake wrote "gdm" instead of "xorg-xdm" in the daemons array of /etc/rc.conf
Now the boot process ends up in gdm login and then... nothing. I want a way to edit /etc/rc.conf
So, what can I do to be able to do so?
Thanx in advance

The 'single' mode didn't work?

I am a step before that. How can I start in the single mode?
I saw the link but do not know what to do to get there.

So gdm works and X is running but you just can't login with it ?
Normally you should be able to launch a Xfce session from gdm and when X is running you can press ctrl + alt + F1-F6 to get in a console. ( F1-F6 means you can choose from F1 to F6 and F7 to get back in X )

I saw the link but do not know what to do to get there.
On the grub menu pick Arch, press 'e' to edit, pick the kernel line - the one that looks somewhat like:
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/bf1d191b-0f0d-4961-bd67-4d023a2e5873 ro
When you press 'e' you (for the second time) you will be able to edit the line; just append 's' so it looks like this
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/bf1d191b-0f0d-4961-bd67-4d023a2e5873 ro s
Now press ESC to exit the edit mode and 'b' to boot this configuration.
You will be asked for root password, so just do the necessary modifications and get out of there i.e. save changes and reboot.
