Alsa issues

I have never had a problem like this before.

Alsa is very temperamental on my system.  The daemon loads without errors (that I can see) however, its hit or miss whether I have sound or not.  Alsa seems to do one of three things: 1) not play anything at the start, 2) it will play anything without issues, and 3) play something and crash while doing so, leaving my audio player or whatever is playing sound at the time to infinitely play the last note of whatever was playing.

EDIT:  I forgot to mention that the above commands were done when the sound wasn't working.
