network manager no option for bluetooth devices

I am using network manager version 0.8.1-1

as stated in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Blu … GPRS_Howto

"Right click on nm-applet and choose "Edit Connections", choose Mobile Broadband tab, click "add" it will pop you up to choose a Mobile Broadband Connection, there you can see your bluetooth device. "

I followed this and I couldnt see any bluetooth device option in the pop up

In my previous version It was showing

Re: network manager no option for bluetooth devices

Yes i have same problem. I've two laptop. One of them Fujitsu-Siemens and the other Acer TimelineX and Arch Linux is installed on both of them. There are some differences between running programs because of hardware issues.

Anyway, i dont know why there is no Bluetooth device option in NetworkManager on Acer TimelineX but it works perfect on Fujitsu-Siemens. Maybe versions are different because Arch Linux on Acer TimelineX is more up-to-date. i'm almost sure the problem doesnt depends on hardware  because when i connect Dial-up Networking (DUN) everything goes ok..

[root@hoobastank ~]# rfcomm
rfcomm0: F0:5E:CD:AE:FC:33 -> 00:25:D0:BF:EF:AE channel 4 connected [reuse-dlc tty-attached]
[root@hoobastank ~]#

so there is actually a Bluetooth device but NetworkManager cant handle it.

Try Sakis3g. I believe it has support for bluetooth devices:-

http://www.sakis3g.org/

I really recommend it a lot. It has worked with several different broadband dongles for me with several sim cards from five different operators.

Yes of course.. as i've told before i did same things what i'd done before on Fujitsu-Siemens, my other laptop. Although Arch Linux on Fujitsu-Siemens has slightly older versions of blueman, networkmanager, modemmanager DUN is working perfect but Acer TimelineX has latest versions of such programs as shown below, DUN isnt correct working. In fact Dial-up Networking is established sucessfully between my smart phone and Linux but i cant see it in Networkmanager.
bluez-4.71-1
blueman-1.21-5
networkmanager-0.8.1-1
modemmanager-0.4-1

Re: network manager no option for bluetooth devices

I see... So it really seems a networkmanager problem... Really strange: I've never encountered one.
I'm really sorry pal, I can't help you! Maybe a some more expert people will have a solution.

Anyway, why do you use bluetooth for connecting via your cellphone? Don't you have a usb cable? It would be easier to connect and internet speed would also be a lot faster!

Re: network manager no option for bluetooth devices

Have you guys solved this issue yet? I could connect just fine with Nokia E71, blueman and networkmanager earlier. After I made fresh install of Arch linux networkmanager can't find my phone anymore. Even though the phone is paired properly and DUN is available from blueman to networkmanager.

It seems that there is something broken in current combination of bluez, blueman and networkmanager.

Re: network manager no option for bluetooth devices

i think that you need gnome-bluetooth to work with networkmanager.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: network manager no option for bluetooth devices

Hello,

I'm having the same Problem with missing bluetooth modem/device when trying to add a new "Mobile Broadband" connection in NM.

Installed versions are

bluez 4.84-1
blueman 1.21-6
networkmanager 0.8.3-0.20101130
modemmanager 0.4-1

Im using Kernel 2.6.36-ARCH with KDE on my Lenovo Thinkpad X201. Mobile phone is Nokia E52 with installed Internetprofile.

Is somebody still on it?
Has someone an explaination/solution?

Best Wishes

P.S. with gnome-bluetooth doesn't work as well. It even does not serve any other services than OBEX for my Phone.

Edit: In fact gnome-bluetooth is the solution:

1) Do not use blueman-applet. Use bluetooth-applet instead (package gnome-bluetooth)
2) Re-pair Phone, enter PIN
3) Last step of the pairing wizard offers a checkbox to 'use this phone as modem'.
4) After enabling that checkbox another wizard appears to set up your mobile-internet-provider or connection details.
5) Finally the phone is listed in tray-menu of networkmanager. One click on it establishes the connection. (Disconnect works the same way)

Sadly I can't rename the connection in the tray-menu of networkmanager. This connection is not listed under "Mobile Broadband", only in tray-menu.
