black screen on startx

hi just with a fresh copy of arch and when i do startx i go to a black screen with 2 withe - at the top that freezes and i cant use ctr+alt+backspace, when i try to do nvidia-settings i get

ERROR: The control display is undefined: please run nvidia-settings --help or usage information

anyone encountered something like this before?

Do you have xorg.conf? Do you have 'zapping' (killing X with ctr+alt+backspace) enabled?
Have you run nvidia-xconfig? Any errors in the logs? Do you have compositing enabled, compiz, what DE / WM are you using?

Add the following to your .xinitrc to enable X zapping.

setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

The same thing happened on my laptop. Unless you have a Sony vpccw17fx or something similar it's probably not the same issue, but here's a link to a fix just in case http://www.geoffcorey.com/setup-sony-nv … 17fx-xorg/
