Hello,
I recently upgraded a few select packages on my server. I did not want to upgrade the entire server just because I haven't upgraded for a while and I did not want to risk breaking the system (it uses LVM and holds backups, so if I screw the system up it's quite possible I lose a bunch of data).
I upgraded and installed packages to add a torrent daemon (I never got it to work, long story), then I installed the packages in base-devel so that I could use the AUR. After all that, I tried to print something and it came up with "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed" next to the printer name. I figured it would be best to reinstall CUPS and all the fomatic drivers, and now CUPS won't even start.
Anyone else experience a similar issue?

Haven't dealt with your particular issue, but a couple times I've tried the "I'll just upgrade part of the system for reason xyz" and ended up with one problem or another. I don't do that anymore.
Dig through your log files and see what errors, if any, CUPS is throwing.
