[SOLVED] Installshield WIne

Hi

I have installed wine 1.3.3 and put a couple of Windows games in.

They run very well.

I wanted to add some mods to one of the games but have a problem with Installshield

When I run setup.exe for the mods, I get "error 5006 : 0x8000ffff".

The guys over at Wine suggest that the problem relates to 32 bit wine but thought that Arch's wine is dual arch?

Any ideas on how I can get Installshield to run with Arch? I should add that Wine 1.2 and the same game/mods worked well in Mandriva.

Thanks in advance for any help

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

What do you mean "dual arch"? How exactly did you install wine, what package? Multilib?

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

I've been having this issue since Wine enabled 64-bit support. (I'm on Arch 64.) Things that used to install, now don't. For instances, not even Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 will install anymore (neither the 32-bit nor 64-bit versions; latter silently crashes (have to check console to see it, in desktop it just looks like it's working)), and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's installer stopped working with that same error you listed, so I had to pull over my already-installed Windows setup complete with extracted registry install information for it to actually let me play.

I'm just patiently waiting. No rush.

Is it a known bug? If so, maybe you can downgrade wine to the last version that worked?

You can try http://arm.konnichi.com/search/index.ph … ommunity=1 but I don't know how well it will work with the current multilib setup.

So it works OK with default windows registry settings? I don't have Windows to try that, unfortunately.

I could install Mandriva now and be pretty confident that it would work, so perhaps Mandriva's reg settings would work too.

I assume this is some kind of config issue as what I want to do it works well on at least one other Linux distro.

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

"So it works OK with default windows registry settings?"
Oblivion wasn't broken, only the Installer. I just copy-pasted the game and relevant registry info from Windows. (Most of Wine's issues (I've seen) is with Installers demanding / checking for so much information from this or that that they aren't satisfied and cop out. The utilities themselves run fine.)

Here's an example. My mother wants me to play Ultima Online: Mondain's Legacy with her (uoml_setup.exe), installer being an InstallShield... It dies within seconds.

The error code mentioned is at the top in the output:

In the absence of any other solutions, I'll file this as a bug.

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

Filed a bug so we'll see what happens.

I tested this on an old 32 bit machine I have and Installshield works fine.

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

/read the link.

I have the means to redo Wine and all applications entirely from scratch in relatively short time, and will do so and report back during if an issue is encountered or after if nothing went wrong. smile

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

I'm no further forward with this so will run wine from a 32bit chroot.

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

I realised that my root partition was only 7 gigs and didn't have enough space for the game there, so I thought I'd test the problem on Slackware.

Everything works fine.

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

I tried this again after (not used Wine for some time) and it works fine if you configure the WINEARCH variable to 32 i.e. delete .wine and run

$ WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

Simple solution in the end.

Thanks wiki.

Re: [SOLVED] Installshield WIne

Actually I can't see this as a solution, what about the working apps and game you may have in wine?
I'd try setting the 32bit evirement to an other dir.
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32
Have not tested i yet since I am looking for a solution to make it work with the multilib wine.
I seems to be a instashield problem http://support.installshield.com/kb/vie … id=Q111253
I'll try to solve this without making double .wine installations.

This is a better method than deleting ~/.wine as suggested by Bazzaah for those with programs already installed. Firstly, a ~/.wine32 dir needs to be generated:

export WINEARCH=win32
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32
winecfg

Then for installing and running software:

wine setup.exe

Not sure how a menu structure would shape up or if there are any conflicts because I haven't got a menu/desktop, but fixes the bug.

Worked for me as well (Gentoo, 64 bit, wine-1.4-rc3).

rm -rf ~/.wine
WINEARCH=win32 winecfg
wine OblivionLauncher.exe
