No sound from anything but Firefox

I am running Arch on my laptop, an HP Pavilion dv6 series. I am using the snd_hda_intel module and pulseaudio. I do have alsa installed as well which is using pulseaudio. Everything looks proper but I am unable to get sound on anything other then Firefox. Youtube and last.fm work in the browser for example. But if I try and use xmms for example it appears to play but I do not get any sound. I do not have anything muted. I have also tried the different module options given on the wiki. Anyone have any ideas of what else I can try?

Check with pavucontrol whether your apps appear. What's your output settings for xmms? I see there's an xmms-pulse plugin in community, for example...

Thanks ngoonee, I tried that and it doesn't seem to have helped. pavucontrol shows that there should be something playing as I see sounds line moving. When I play last.fm in Firefox, it shows that sound is playing with the ALSA plug-in and is using ALSA Playback. Any other ideas?

Flash seems to work fine though as YouTube works without a problem. It is applications outside of the web browser sad

Re: No sound from anything but Firefox

yes, but if flash uses alsa it blocks pulse. That's how I figured it.  I could be wrong of course.

Re: No sound from anything but Firefox

To install aur/libflashsupport-pulse I had to install aur/flashplugin-prerelease. Now I don't have any sound at all, not even from the browser smile

oh.  I'm running the prerelease, I didn't notice that it was dependent on it.  if it's any comfort, my system with the beta and that pulse support works perfectly tongue

Re: No sound from anything but Firefox

This is a desktop.   the audio is hda-intel (realtek).  Again, I suggest messing around with it, sorry if I can't be of more help.  Mind you, my flash installation is a bit flaky, the prerelease not working in rekonq, but working nicely in minefield/firefox4beta.

I know this is a lot of beta, but for me my desktop finally works, including youtube hd fullscreen without lag.

Re: No sound from anything but Firefox

I think I fixed it, I was tinkering around a bit and decided to install pulseaudio-gnome. Which is a collection of some packages, not sure if that exactly fixed it but I did that and messed with the settings in pavucontrol a bit more and I have sound! Now I just need to try and sync up the volumes somehow. Now I can really get work done!
