pacman-cage for ssd

Whatever happened to pacman-cage? Is it still in the AUR somewhere?

Also, what exactly does pacman-cage do, and is it a good idea to use for an SSD where I want to minimize disk writes?

Re: pacman-cage for ssd

I did search! But clearly not hard enough. I got directed to this originally http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=5907 which has a broken address and looks unpromising.

Thanks for the good links though.

It's always good to write "I've found this and that but it's not what I'm looking for / the packages are broken / out of date" etc.

Maybe you should also have a look at rebase, as it also tries to minimize writes to disc: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/projects/rebase/

OK it turns out the link on the wiki is wrong. I added your link to the wiki too now.

Do you happen to know whether pacman-cage is good for ssds and why?
The wiki isn't too clear about that.

Re: pacman-cage for ssd

rebase looks cool - thanks! I'll put that on the ssd wiki too.

I've never used pacman-cage and I don't know how safe or efficient is it.
Check out my previous post for other suggestions.

Edit: I'm getting old. Gone are the days I could post quickly enough ;P

pacman does the same as of 3.4.0, just without the fancy output.

I'm not sure, there's a lot of i/o when I'm not using the '--rebase' switch in bauerbill.

Re: pacman-cage for ssd

Using something like this on an SSD would be stupid, as an SSD has no penalty for random seeks...

Re: pacman-cage for ssd

And I can confirm, as a xfs user I can tell that pacman became MUCH faster on this filesystem when version 3.4 came out. Just as fast as rebase does.
