Cpufreq trouble [SOLVED]

I was using cpufrequtils, with the p4-clockmod driver. After the last upgrade I cannot load this or other drivers.

My cpu is Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, with nforce chipset.

Any idea? Thank you in advance.

Re: Cpufreq trouble [SOLVED]

First, with a Core 2 Duo I think you're supposed to be using acpi-cpufreq, not p4-clockmod.

Then... What have you tried, and what errors do you get?

I'm getting

FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device

Re: Cpufreq trouble [SOLVED]

If you've got an Asus motherboard/laptop then its DSDT is probably not Linux-compatible, though I wouldn't know why it worked before the update and not now.

You might have more luck with the deprecated speedstep-centrino module (I see some people with C2D processors are/were using that), but you'll have to build it yourself or install a precompiled kernel package like http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33104  (see comments for a link to the precompiled package, but be aware that SMP is disabled in it.)

Also maybe some things to try in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=50380

Cpufreq on Linux can be a pain; it took me 2 years to find out how to make it work on my Asus laptop. Good luck...

Re: Cpufreq trouble [SOLVED]

Hi again,

I upgraded my BIOS, and now I can load acpi-cpufreq and it works ok. The BIOS upgrade said "updated CPU microcode".

Thanks for your help, you give me the clue.

Re: Cpufreq trouble [SOLVED]

Ah, good smile ... I didn't think to mention this because Asus never released a BIOS update to fix the problem for my laptop... Glad to have helped a little.
